What the Exterra system actually does
Most termite treatments are about defence. You create a treated zone around the building and the termites either die crossing it or go somewhere else. The colony out in the paddock, the neighbour's gum tree or under the road keeps doing what it has always done.
Exterra takes the opposite approach. Rather than defending the perimeter, it uses the termites' own foraging behaviour against them. Workers find the bait, feed on it, and carry it back to the nest where it is shared through the colony. The target is the colony itself, not just the workers that happen to reach your house.
That distinction matters on properties where a chemical barrier is impractical, where the owner would rather not have termiticide applied to the soil, or where termites have already been found and the source is somewhere off the property entirely.
How it works on your property
In-ground stations are installed at intervals around the perimeter of the building, positioned where termites are most likely to forage. Each station holds timber interceptors that termites find far more appealing than the surrounding soil.
From that point the system is about monitoring. We check the stations on a regular cycle and record what we find at each one. Most inspections turn up nothing, and that is the point: the stations are an early warning system running quietly in the background.
When termites are found in a station, bait is introduced without disturbing the feeding activity. Termites that are already comfortable in a station will keep returning to it, which is exactly what you want. Where there is active termite workings on the structure itself, above-ground stations can be fixed directly to the workings so the bait reaches the colony faster.
Monitoring continues after the activity stops. Colony elimination is not something you can confirm in a fortnight, and a system that is not being checked is not protecting anything.

What it does not do
Baiting is not instant. A chemical barrier is working from the day it goes in the ground, whereas a baiting system depends on termites finding the stations and then taking bait back to the nest. That can take time, and it is worth knowing that before you start.
It also depends entirely on the monitoring being kept up. A system that is installed and then forgotten is worse than useless, because it creates a sense of protection that is not actually there. If nobody is checking the stations, you do not have a termite management system, you have plastic in the ground.
We will tell you plainly whether baiting or a chemical barrier suits your property better. Sometimes the answer is both, and sometimes a barrier on its own is the sensible option. That decision comes out of the inspection, not out of a brochure.
